Looking at photos and reading reviews for hotels online are a few ways we can get a sense of what a property is like when deciding to book accommodation.
However, sometimes what you see isn’t always the full picture.
Now, a hotel worker has shared a “red flag” that is relatively simple to spot on arrival, and suggests it’s a sign you should be finding somewhere else to stay.

Santiago Leon, the general manager at The Robey, shared some advice with Business Insider around what to look for when checking into a hotel.
“A simple but telling red flag is when light bulbs are not working in the common areas,” he told the publication.
“As minuscule as it may sound, I think it speaks volumes about how well the hotel is maintained, its budget, management, and attention to detail.”

He also warned guests to be wary if the hotel doesn’t ask for ID, and if pre-arrival communication or assistance with any inquiries is also lacklustre, it’s another minus.
“Safety has to be a top priority for hotels,” he added.

It comes after another hotel worker revealed the biggest ‘no-nos’ she sees guests do regularly.
“I work a front desk at a hotel and I’m going to read off a list of things you should not do as someone who is coming to visit a hotel,” she began a clip shared on TikTok.
Her number one “guest no-no” is turning up late. She also warned guests to consider their manners and behaviour when at a hotel.
Don’t “get mad at employees who are just doing their jobs,” she cautioned, also warning people to avoid bringing their kids to the hotel bar.
